Post NBA Draft

After going undrafted, my agent and I talked weekly about my next step in the NBA process. The first step was deciding to either play in summer league camp with an NBA team as a free agent or to go overseas and possibly be out of the minds of NBA teams. I was given the option to go to Germany or France, which were both high paying jobs or play summer league with the New Jersey Nets or Atlanta Hawks. After contemplating both options, I chose to go to summer league with the New Jersey Nets.

Going to camp with the New Jersey Nets was a good experience. I got great tutelage in practice from one of the players I grew up watching, Bill Cartwright. I also became good friends with Marcus Williams from the University of Connecticut and several others on the team. I also got the chance to hang out with Vince Carter for a couple days and see how high profile NBA players carry themselves on a daily basis. I also hung out with several other players from different teams during camp; such as Adam Morrison, Joahkim Noah, and Raymond Felton. However, the actual game experience did not go the way I had imagined. I was given limited playing time and didn't get the opportunity to showcase my abilities. The next step in the NBA process would be training camp (generally the first week or two of practice) starting October 2nd with the Atlanta Hawks.

But meanwhile, I had to stay in shape while waiting for training camp to come around. During that time I worked out with the San Antonio Spurs for 2 weeks and got the opportunity to play with world champions such as Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobli. While working out with the Spurs, I became close friends with a fellow rival from Kansas University (LOL) who had graduated in 2006, Keith Langford. He helped me get acclimated to different things I would see and different personalities I would run across in the NBA as a free agent.

I also worked out with the Cleveland Cavaliers before going to training camp. Most of the players were in and out throughout the week (in more than out), including Lebron James. Ironically, I ran across another rival from college who I also became close friends with, Anthony Tolliver from Creighton University, who was going to training camp with them.

During this period, I also worked out in my hometown, Jefferson City, MO and took advantage of much needed time with my family, who was very happy to have me around. I worked out with my 8th grade basketball coach, Ray Hughes- one of the best and most passionate basketball trainers I've ever had.
